Raku

Raku, which has its origins in Japan, means joyfulness. This process was used in the making of bowls and dishes for the traditional tea ceremony. The immediacy and robustness of the method—the whole story of making a pot, shaping it from earth and water, the transformation by fire—unfolds before the eyes in minutes. To draw a pot from the red hot kiln, cover it in sawdust, and then lift it still smouldering to quench it in water to create its colour and texture is always a moment of sheer magic to the potter.
